Hello! My name is Bayanjargal. I’m the manager of Gobi-Altai Learning Center. I have started working at Bookbridge Govi-Altai last September. We got an invitation to participate in the English Festival 2018 in Arvaiheer honorably. As this is the first trip for my students and me, we were so happy to get there. And 19 students, Peace Corps Volunteer Hany and myself participated in the event themed “Halloween”. All activities were related to Halloween and was organized in English. We spent 4 days in Arvaiheer.
First day: When we arrived in Arvaiheer, the great manager of learning center Arvaiheer, Uuganaa, and her students came to bring us to the learning center although it was so late. They had already prepared delicious snack and salads on the Halloween desk with special decorations for us. Students introduced each other and students from Arvaiheer presented about how BOOKBRDIGE has affacted their behaviors and changed their attitude, then we sang songs together for greeting. In the afternoon, students were divided into 5 groups. Students met their hosts and had a city tour with them. During the tour, organizers/Uuganaa and Baynaa/ observed how they were working as a team. We graded their creativity, team working and time management.
Second day: Uuganaa’s students decorated the gym with full of hand made decorations which were so creative and inspiring for our students. Morning activities were organized by Peace Corps Volunteers and organizers and they had Halloween games, spelling bee, team trivia and fun teambuilding games. The history of Halloween was presented in English. Each activity was graded by observing their team working, equal participation etc.
In the afternoon, we had a 40 minutes team paper-based test about Halloween. After that students created their own Halloween poems as a team and performed it. Then Mummy Fashion show was held as a team and performed. Finally, all students had a Halloween disco with costumes. Students were so excited about the team activities in English.
Third day: During sport day students had teams by mixing different provinces. Volleyball competition was held as a team in a friendly way. Rally race and fun games were organized by older students. Sport activities weren’t directed to compete but also supported team work.
Fourth day: All of us had fun time as a whole group from Gobi-Altai province. We enjoyed our time in Arvaiheer a lot with energy. It was time to say goodbye to our hosts and our new friends. They were sad to say goodbye.
Finally, as I’m just starting to manage my learning center, I got a lot of experiences such as how to organize activities, how to motivate students and make them creative. Furthermore, I got ideas such as letting students wear slippers in the classroom, tidy up their classes after each class, increasing their confidence to present in front of public and express their opinion freely and leading other students in activities such as dancing.
