With the support from an volunteer, Meanrith Meas, our temporary head of the BOOKBRIDGE learning center in Siem Reap, Cambodia, organized a free English Class. In this post, Meanrith shares his impressions about the class.
Bella Shepherd from London, England, volunteered at Bookbridge Learning Center for seven weeks starting from July 30th to September 13rd, 2013. Bella was interested in supporting the learning center during her trip in Southeas Asian countries. Bella spent her morning working in the learning center and allocated one and half hours each morning from Monday to Friday for teaching a group of students who signed up for a free Summer English class offered in the learning center.
Within seven weeks of her voluntary work, Bella offered a practical English course based on a weekly session plan covering English grammar, Practical Speaking and Listening, Practical writing, Cultural Exchange and Educational activities and games.
The students participated in her English class showed their enthusiasm in engaging in every session which was found suitably prepared for a different range of student ability. It is observed that most of the students really enjoyed learning every session Bella offered. Some of them even felt not really happy when they missed her class. They found many different ways of gaining English knowledge from learning with a native English speaker. In each of her session, Bella combined an educational activity/game with her core lesson content so that the students were actively in learning it.
Each week, Bella always played an interesting movie for her students to watch so that they could improve their listening skills through watching it . Writing a short summary of their favorite movies made them even more actively in taking part in the session. Even though it was her teaching was only one and half month, but it was every useful for the students. They told me they learned a lot from her, not just different skills in learning English, but cultural experience and having fun. I myself as a temporary head of Bookbridge Learning Center also gained a good experience in offering educational activities to Cambodian students. Thank you so much Bella, for your valuable supports to the students and Bookbridge Learning Center in Siem Reap.
